I’ve recently run across some rather misinformed opinions on other blogs regarding Bob Barr’s tax proposals versus Ron Paul’s. Several bloggers have made the suggestion that Paul is better because he wants to eliminate the income tax, while Barr only wants to replace it with a sales tax. It’s time to set the record straight.
Ron Paul proposed eliminating the personal income tax, but not Social Security Taxes, Medicare taxes, or corporate income taxes. The Fair Tax (which Barr supports) aims to replace ALL federal taxes with a single, simple national sales tax. The advantage of a sales tax is that it is very visible to the public instead of being hidden in the price of products and services as is the corporate income tax. Paul has said repeatedly that a sales tax would be better than the current system. Furthermore, both Paul and Barr advocate downsizing government substantially so that the resulting tax burden will be far lower than it is today.
That’s the bottom line.
